Wot, no rain? no fog? no ice? no gusting winds? Yesterday brought blue skies and a large club turnout was (briefly) able to imagine that Spring had sprung. Some took a gravel route around Huddersfield and Emley Moor, others went for a spin above the Colne valley, and some braver souls headed for the Mamil cafe in Brighouse having perhaps forgotten how steep the likes of the Pole Moor climb are en route. Everyone enjoyed riding in fine weather - just look at how much joy riding with HCC can bring to a grown man!

You pays your money, you takes your choice.
One group headed east to Methley, the other stayed local and rolled out to Emley. One got fog, the other bright sunshine 🌫️☀️
Another late start thanks to ice warnings – winter still refusing to let go.
Methley riders battled a full set of mechanical gremlins: slipping seatposts, binding brakes and even a broken spoke (full bingo card completed).
The Emley crew nearly overwhelmed the Café in the Village, but credit to them for calling in extra staff and keeping the panini flowing 👏🥪
Bitcoin mining was discussed at length over coffee… and remains completely unsolved.
Cracking day out all round and great to see so many riders braving the conditions 🚴‍♂️🚴‍♀️

We all know how bad the weather has been of late.

We all know how bad the weather has been of late. Our (multiple) weather apps also tell us that there's no major improvement in sight. So what do our riders do? Some grab whatever non-rain window they can - easier for those not cursed with work 😉- or they pull on their big girl and boy jackets and pants and go out anyway. Remember: you've never too far away from a warm cafe ... or welcoming bus shelter!

Despite the lone cyclist at 9.30 meet up, other club members were busy elsewhere. 2 members completed Dicko's Reliability Ride and 3 members set off on a gravel ride to Sheffield. Presumably the remaining members either got on their indoor trainers or stayed in bed!

Holmfirth Cycling Club are excited to see that the Grand Depart 2027 travels through our cycling homelands. Our club has a high percentage of women riders and committee members. Imogen Wolff from UCI team Visma-Lease A Bike cut her teeth with the club. Anything we can do to promote womens cycling is great.

Wed 19th Jan
A frosty morning forced a later start than usual, but after the recent weather-imposed hibernation riders were released like caged animals — only with more Lycra and fewer survival skills. Four different speed groups set off, all wrapped up in so many layers it was hard to recognise anyone.
The B group numbered 16 riders, with women making up more than half — clearly the toughest bunch on the day. A new café in Emley village provided vital mid-ride morale in the form of excellent toasted teacakes, which disappeared at an alarming rate.
Not to be outdone, the D group headed off to the Ranch Café and quietly knocked out a near-70-mile round trip, proving that “steady” is a relative term. A cold day, good riding, and strong evidence that nobody should be kept off their bike for too long.

Why not join Holmfirth Cycling Club?
Membership is only £10 - no, not per month, but for an entire year! If you join now you get 15 months at the price of 12, your membership lasts until March 2027.

The club organises rides for most abilities and is e-bike inclusive. Club runs are on Sunday and Wednesday at 9.30am in the winter. Distances range between 20 and 100+ miles. There are also monthly Away Days, annual Camping Weekends and other events. The club provides coaching for children too. It's a great way to meet people and explore the wonderful outdoors. Christmas Eve rides

A cracking 40 riders rolled out on a bright and breezy Christmas Eve, proof that mince pies can wait when there’s a ride to be done! With three different pace groups on offer, everyone found their groove and headed off in good spirits.
All roads led to the windmills, where we regrouped for the traditional group photo – lots of smiles, festive kit and the odd red nose on show.
The Bankview Café was buzzing but still managed to squeeze us all in and serve up their usual excellent food and coffee, which went down a treat after the miles. A brilliant way to kick off the festive season with great company and good riding. 🎄🚴‍♂️

Cycling Club Christmas Rides

The club’s Christmas rides drew a fantastic turnout of over 60 members, helped along by the promise of pie and peas at a new venue, New Mill Club. Wet and windy conditions meant many of the planned rides were sensibly curtailed, but spirits remained high throughout the morning.

The D group braved the elements and completed a gravel route, taking in canal towpaths that were perfectly in keeping with the seasonal conditions. For many, however, the real talking point of the day was the debut of the new club mudflaps — proving to be just what was needed in the current weather.

A great way to round off the year with good company, good food, and true club camaraderie.

Wednesday 3rd December
Nearly 30 riders gathered at 9.30am under bright winter sunshine, a welcome sight after recent weeks of ice, wind, and rain. With seven different routes planned across the Pennine hills, groups fanned out in all directions—only to find many of the rides naturally converging again in Slaithwaite.

It was a real sliding-doors moment as one group rolled out of the café just as the next arrived. The Handmade Bakery did us proud once more: superb coffee and excellent mushrooms on toast proving popular with hungry riders.

A glorious morning to be out on two wheels, taking in the views and crisp air of God’s Own Country. A cracking day out for Holmfirth Cycling Club.

Sun 30th November
After two weeks off the bikes (for some us anyway!) thanks to ice, wind, and rain, it was great to see a strong turnout at the Co-op meetup. With four different paced rides on offer—including a gravel option—there was something for everyone.

We set off under stunning blue skies, though a few icy patches kept things interesting. Traffic was noticeably busy, perhaps with early Christmas shoppers out in force.

Spotty Café did the B Long group proud: chips, eggs, and beans sparked some serious food envy… at least until someone’s halloumi wrap arrived and stole the show.

All in all, a brilliant set of rides and a great day out with the club.

The combination of mild weather (for November) and beautiful autumn colours saw a variety of groups set off from the Coop car park on Wednesday. Some took on the legendary (for locals) "Ring of Fire" route, spicing things up by doing it 'in reverse', while others took things a little steadier. All returned safe and happy.

Fine weather yesterday encouraged our riders to adopt varying strategies. Some gave their gravel bikes an outing to pay homage to the "curly wurly boat" in Sheffield, some rode over the tops to the Albion cafe in Saddleworth, and a third group enjoyed good food in (if not the climb out of) Slaithwaite at the Northern Soul Cafe. All enjoyed a great day out in good autumnal weather. The full English offering was served at cafe 313 in Sheffield.

Fair Autumn weather and fine landscape colours saw groups set off yesterday in varying directions. Some went East to the Old Stables in Siltstone Common while others ventured South, and further, to Chesterfield via the Strines. Apparently the stainless steel sculpture is officially named The Mollusc and/but widely known locally by the nickname 'The Snail'. No reflection whatsoever on the pace of either group.
